Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (sometimes referred to as FHC or FHCC) is a rare, malignant liver tumor. The tumor is typically characterized by fibrous bands in a unique “lamellar” pattern under the microscope. It is primarily diagnosed in adolescents and young adults with no underlying liver disease. Fibrolamellar accounts for only 1% to 5% of all cases of classic HCC.

Max Burdette was diagnosed with FHC when he was 15 years old. He died in September 2014 after a two year battle with this rare form of cancer. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, a friend…a typical teenager. He lived life to the fullest and after his cancer diagnosis he managed to cram a lifetime into two short years. He learned how to ride a motorcycle, which turned into a passion. He got his driver’s license as well as his first car. He went parasailing and learned the art of glassblowing. In the face of such a devastating illness, he was determined to take charge of his own life. He wanted to survive and find a cure so that no young person would ever have to hear those awful words “you have Fibrolamellar liver cancer.”

The Max Burdette Fibrolamellar Cancer Research Foundation was granted its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization in April 2016. All donations are tax deductible. The original purpose for establishing a foundation was a selfish one: we wanted to keep Max’s memory alive. But then we began to think about some of the things that were very important to Max: Finding a cure for Fibrolamellar and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Foundation has several goals, including, but not limited to, raising Fibrolamellar awareness and providing support to all those affected by this form of cancer: the patient, their family, and their caregivers. To that end, we plan to engage in fundraising events throughout the year that involve the community to provide financial support for research leading to the eradication of FHC. We are especially interested in raising funds to establish a Fibrolamellar research clinic at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
