About this cause:
Nearly 18,000 homeless men, women and children have sought refuge at the Arlington Life Shelter over the past 25 years. On a very cold night in 1987, volunteers opened the doors, welcoming those with no place to call home. In the beginning, the majority of residents were unemployed men, often challenged by alcohol or mental illness. Today, single parent families make up nearly half of the shelter population. The majority of children receiving care this year have been under 4 years of age. Changing demographics have seen the shelter expand from providing cold weather shelter to the comprehensive rehabilitative services offered today.
Individuals and families who come to the Arlington Life Shelter are truly BRAVE. They give up what they know and commit to a program that shepherds them back to an apartment or home. Struggles along the way include saving money and paying debts or warrants; giving up drug or alcohol habits; establishing consistent work habits; having a new baby and/or learning new parenting skills. It is not the easy way, but it is the BRAVE way.
