About this cause:If you stutter, you're not alone!
The National Stuttering Association is the world’s largest stuttering support organization dedicated to providing resources to people who stutter and their families. Based in New York, the organization maintains over 125 support group chapters serving its thousands of members nationwide.
Why We Matter
• Bullying and Teasing: Children who stutter are often victims of bullying and teasing in school. Often, children who stutter are the only students in their schools who stutter, which can contribute to feelings of isolation. We work with parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists to empower children who stutter with strategies for coping with teasing.
• Workplace Discrimination: Some adults experience workplace discrimination as a result of negative stereotypes about stuttering. Our support groups and local chapters give adults who stutter an opportunity to share their experiences and become more self-confident.
• Education Speech Professionals: We are a valuable resource for speech-language pathologists to learn how to increase the effectiveness of speech therapy in school and clinical practice.
Research has shown that meeting other people who stutter is the primary reason why individuals attend support groups, and the National Stuttering Association prides itself on its ability to connect people who stutter across the country. For the past 31 years, the National Stuttering Association has held a well-attended national annual conference for children, teens, and adults who stutter, as well as their family members and speech professionals.
