About this cause:At 4 days of life Xander was diagnosed with a rare disease known as Maple Syrup Urine Disease. Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) in short is a condition that does not allow the person to process protein properly. Too much protein in his body causes his brain to swell. Currently, Xander can only process 3 grams of protein a day. For reference, 3 ounces of chicken is 28 grams of protein, 1 egg is 6 grams, so his diet is extremely limited.
One treatment for MSUD is a liver transplant. A new liver will allow Xander to process protein in a "normal" way and not have a fear of brain damage! On January 9th Xander will be listed for a transplant and we are pursuing the option of living donation.
Due to the rarity of this disease, the family has to travel 3 hours away from their home for treatment, including the transplant. Travel to and from the hospital will continue frequently after the surgery. Proceeds from this will help the family pay for travel and living costs as well as the actual cost of surgery.
