About this cause:HELLP syndrome is a life-threatening obstetric complication usually considered to be a variant or complication of pre-eclampsia. "HELLP" is an abbreviation of the three main features of the syndrome:
Elevated Liver enzymes
Low Platelet count
The mortality rate of HELLP syndrome has been reported to be as high as 25%. Perinatal mortality (stillbirths plus death in infancy) is between 73 and 119 per 1000 babies of woman with HELLP, while up to 40% are small for gestational age.
I had never heard of HELLP Syndrome before until my beautiful firstborn, Ava Carmella, was stillborn at 37 weeks. I had signs of HELLP in the weeks leading to her birth and none of the medical professionals I was under the care of recognized the danger until it was too late. We know about Preeclampsia, Gestational Diabetes, Genetic Diseases, etc. How many pregnant woman, OB's and midwives are aware of HELLP Syndrome?? Knowledge and prevention is so important.
Please help me and slowly we can make a difference for so many families!
