About this cause:What is HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy)? It is a genetic heart muscle disease. 1 in 500 have HCM affected hearts, many more may carry the gene that will express at some point in life. HCM may cause symptoms of shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, chest pain/discomfort, stroke, heart failure and cardiac arrest. Those with HCM don’t often “look sickâ€. Because of this those with HCM often do not get the support and appreciation of their limitations and struggles.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition. We didn’t eat the wrong thing, fail to exercise, or take recreational drugs...our genes simply have a spelling error that makes our heart muscle too thick and beat too strong. HCM can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, heart failure and rarely transplant.
Many of us face battles in diagnosis because HCM mimics so many other conditions with symptoms of shortness of breath, dizziness, chest discomfort, palpitations and fatigue – these symptoms come and go and sometimes we don’t really notice them… we think its “normalâ€.
My journey to find a diagnosis took 6 longs years and many unnecessary procedures, surgeries and YES some Dr.'s even telling me I needed to seek mental help. With the help of my wonderful cardiologists and the HCMA I have finally gotten my diagnosis and am learning to live with this disease.
