When Food is Scary

Posted on August 03 2014

I am one of 15 million people with food allergies. Only I didn't know it. My first anaphyllactic reaction sent me to intensive care in an ambulance when my daughter was 5. I had an allergic reaction to the oil of bergamot in my herbal tea. Then in 1994 I was sent to an allergist. Low and behold, I was highly allergic to lettuce and cabbage. It made me change my entire diet. Just recently I sat down to dinner and had an allergic reaction to food I had prepared. I had no idea I was allergic to raw onions. Only raw ones as the allergen cooks out. Which explains why I don't like raw onions. Food allergy awareness is almost nil in this country. I am doing a food walk on September 13, 2014 to bring awareness to the public and restaurant owners, bakers, and others in the food industry. When someone tells you they are allergic to something please take it seriously. I had no idea the first time. I spent three days in intensive care and two weeks at home recovering. Now I carry epi-pens wherever I go.
