Love Never Forgets

Love Never Forgets
I rememember vividly the days that my Granny and my Grandpa forgot who I was. I remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when Granny told my mom to remind me to come visit her more, even though I had just hugged her goodbye. I remember trying not to cry when I gave Grandpa my senior pictures to show in his room at the Alzheimer's facility we had moved him to and he didn't realize that the girl in the pictures was his granddaughter sitting beside him. I remember when Grandpa pointed to a picture of my grandmother, his wife of 52 years who had passed 3 years before, and asked who the lady in the picture was. I remember.

Alzheimer's is a disease I would not wish on my worst enemy. It is the most heartbreaking thing in the world to lose someone you love twice - once in mind and finally in body. It was so hard to visit Granny and see the woman who so fiercely valued her independence have to be dependent on others. It broke my heart to see Grandpa, who never knew a stranger, sit silent.

As heartbreaking and upsetting as Alzheimer's is, I have always tried to focus on one thing - that love never forgets. Even in their final days, Granny and Grandpa both knew that they were surrounded by people who loved them, and they continued to love us, even though they weren't quite sure who we were. Love never forgets.

Please consider purchasing a Bravelets piece from Team Angel - Walk to End Alzheimer's. We walk to end Alzheimer's, and we walk because love never forgets.
