Liam the Brave

Liam the Brave
This is Liam. He is two years old and he has a severe congenital Kypho-scoliosis. Before he was a year old, he had open heart surgery due to an Atrial Septal Defect (a whole in his heart between two chambers). He also was diagnosed with Tethered Spinal Cord Syndrome, in which he had surgery to correct. This all sounds like a lot. Well, it is.

But let me tell you why this matters. He is sunshine and everything beautiful on this planet. He has been in and out of casts for a year now. He was delayed for a while when he was younger and he has been through a lot already. You would never know it. He smiles more than any person I have ever met and his laugh is spectacular.

He is the reason my family is brave. Because we have to be for him. We make sure that we don't worry so he doesn't have to. I wear my Bravelet everytime I have to travel an hour and a half a way to send him into an operating room. He is so loved and precious.

Now here is the part not a lot of people want to admit. Being the parent of a child who has an special need...is incredible hard. He scares me. Because he goes through situations that others couldn't. We thought we would lose him at one point.

It may seem silly how a bracelet or a necklace could make a difference. It does. Because when I am sitting in that waiting room, I look down. I see those two words. Be Brave. It reminds me that I am not alone, that everything will work out. We got this. BE BRAVE.
