Help ASMBA STAR Foundation Support Smoky Mountain Service Dogs - Loudon, Tennessee
There are over 2.3 million people serving on active duty in our U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserve components. The latest census information shows there are more than 21 million veterans in the United States. That same census reported that almost 4 million (one out of every five) of these veterans are disabled. While most of them are over age 65, the number of younger disabled soldiers has been increasing steadily since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 1 million of these veterans have no type of health insurance and almost 60,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. Almost all of these military members and veterans have family members, bringing the total military community to over 50 million individuals.

Our military family is in the midst of a crisis! Their needs are great, and they are growing daily. Many Americans believe that the United States government takes care of all of the service members’ needs, and while great strides have been made in getting our soldiers, veterans and their families the help they need, there just aren’t enough resources to go around.

As Americans, it’s our duty to Support, Thank, Acknowledge, and Remember the sacrifices made every day by the brave men and women who protect our country. As an organization, we feel it’s not only our duty, but our responsibility to do so. That’s why the ASMBA STAR Foundation was created – and we do it by supporting the military charities healing our nation’s heroes.

One of those amazing organizations is Smoky Mountain Service Dogs. This all-volunteer organization acquires, trains and places certified (ADI-tested and approved) service dogs with qualified veterans who have physical and psychological disabilities – at no charge to the veteran.

Producing a certified service dog, using volunteer puppy raisers, puppy socializers and intermediate foster families working under the supervision of professional trainers/consultants requires about 1,200 hours of training including 300 hours of final intensive training and customized training hours conducted exclusively by professional trainers. There is a huge need for certified service dogs for our veterans, and the largest obstacle to provided these dogs for our wounded warriors is the cost.

The average cost to select, raise, train, and certify a service dog is approximately $20,000 to $25,000; however, with the exception of certain associated fees, Smoky Mountain Service Dogs provides service dogs to approved disabled Veterans for no charge.

In order to continue providing dogs to America’s veterans, Smoky Mountain Service Dogs has an ongoing need for training sponsorships at $5,000 per dog and the STAR Foundation is proud to assist them in that need! Will you join us in supporting Smoky Mountain Service Dogs as they work to heal our nation's heroes?
