Anthony's Legacy

Anthony's Legacy
On Monday April 18, 2011 my 26 year old son, Anthony died by suicide creating a huge hole in our hearts not to mention confusion and shock. What did we miss? How could we not know that he had these thoughts? Anthony was never diagnosed with any mental illness that would make me think that suicide would be an option. He was the guy everyone loved to be with, the clown, the intellect, the support for others; he was loved dearly by all he came in contact with. It's only in retrospect that I can now say he most likely had some type of anxiety disorder. But again, I never related anxiety to depression or suicidal ideation.

Since then we have been walking in Anthony's memory at our local Out of the Darkness Community Walk sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). It's become my goal to ensure that others understand the risk factors and the treatment options available. I want people to understand what I did not. I want to be a support for others who have lost a loved one to suicide. So for me, a partnership with AFSP is the best way I can find to ensure that there is continued research, advocacy, support and education regarding the risks and contributing factors of suicide and it's prevention.
